History at Edgewood

Edgewood Cemetery’s hundreds of varying tombstones make it an interesting place to learn about former citizens of Chillicothe. Each tombstone tells a piece of a life’s story. Some of the tombstones are handmade, decorated with small rocks of varying sizes and color. Some tombstones are lavish in size. Many mark the graves of servicemen who served in wars as far back as the American Civil War. The cemetery’s tallest tombstone, a 40,000-pound Missouri red-granite obelisk, marks the graves of former Missouri Governor Alexander Monroe Dockery, his wife, Mary Elizabeth Bird Dockery and their eight children. This tombstone was set on the tallest point in the cemetery and was set by hand, erected with mules and a block and tackle pulley system by Moore Monument Company around 1904.
